Stuck at Home? Learn to Snap Better Pics of your Kiddos

By now, things are just weird. Some of you may still be going to work, some of you may be home with your children as more schools are closing. No matter what your situation, one thing is certain- you are home with your whole family more than you probably ever have been. It’s easy to panic & wonder how on Earth you’re supposed to entertain your kiddos during this time. Nobody knows what is to come or when this will all be over, but the internet is quickly becoming flooded with news articles, silly (and sometimes negative) memes, and tips and tricks to working from home with your children there or how to homeschool these little monsters.

Isaac and I have three young kiddos at home & at the studio with us. When I say young, I mean REALLY young. Our daughter is 4, our son is 2.5, and our brand new baby boy is 6 weeks! To say this is hard is an understatement and it has only been like one day. Although this article isn’t here to complain about our situation, please say a prayer for our sanity!

As a mama of three youngsters, one thing that came to mind during this crisis is, “What can I do for my kids now that I will be so glad I did in the future?” I started to look at baby photos of the kids and realized they were unorganized & needed to be printed, organized into baby books, etc. Then it hit me! As a parent, we take so many photos of our kids- almost daily! Even though I am a professional photographer, I take more photos of my kids on my phone than my actual camera. If there’s one thing I could offer to parents during this down time, it is to offer some tips and tricks to getting better photos of your kiddos so you can cherish their sweet little faces when they’re all grown up!

So let’s dive in!

Get on their level.

Your point of view is typically awkward when it comes to photography. The best angle tends to be down on their level, especially for babies & toddlers. Try to get your camera or phone down to their eye level. Basically, pretend you’re their age & make it fun! The only hard part with this is when your model is on the move. You can only crawl or walk on your knees so fast before they’re out of your sight.

IMG_7213.JPG

Try new angles.

This idea totally goes against the first example. When it is intentional, that’s ok! This photo was taken from my point of view, which can be really cute! Notice how I incorporated my arm in there? This really helps the photo tell the story of our spring time nature walk.

IMG_4186.JPG

Make them laugh & let them be silly.

Selfies are the best! For some reason, I notice that young kiddos really start to ham up for a good ole' selfie. If you’re tot is a bit stubborn, here’s an idea. Take a few silly selfies and end up with more of a smile. Then slowly slide your face out of the frame and just get your child in the photo. This way it seems like a selfie to them, but the end result is just a nice photo of them!

IMG_3193.JPG

Find the light.

This is extremely important. Do your best (when possible) to find natural light. Try to stay away from lamps, florescent, and warm indoor lighting. Whenever possible, take photos of your kids outside or in front of a window. If you take anything away from this article, please PLEASE let it be this next sentence. When photographing your subject with window light, place the subject adjacent from the window so that you are standing in front of the window, but not blocking the light. This will allow the natural light to light your subject instead of blow our your background.

If you can’t get a smile, try candid.

Candid is great for many reasons. It’s wonderful to get photos of your child in action, but also a great thing to use when you just want to give up on the posed, smiling photo. Sometimes after asking them to smile over and over, realizing that you just aren’t going to get a genuine smile is just what you need. Let it go, mama. Candid can be just as fun!

I hope this helps ease the stress of photographing your kids! Good luck & please stay home!

Tell us how you first met? Who, what, when, where, why? Give us the dirty details.

We met at a college party.

When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.

Emery- When we first started dating he traveled a lot for work. I knew he was the one when I couldn't wait for him to come home for the weekend. Dylan: I knew she was the one when she didn't get upset at me for playing video games.

Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?)

Emery- We had planned a vacation with Dylan's family to go to Duluth in September. In August we looked at rings and I had hinted multiple times that Duluth would be a good place to propose. At first I was expecting it, but as the weekend went on, he still didn't propose and he was acting normal. I thought he would be nervous. On Sunday we packed up the car to go home. I was convinced at that point he did not have a ring and wasn't going to propose. Then on her way out of Duluth we pulled over at a beach area that Dylan had went to as a kid. We watched our dog play around in the sand and bark at the waves. Then he pointed out into the distance (it was super foggy) and asked if I could see the boat. I couldn't see a boat and then I realized it was a trick. I turned around and he was down on one knee.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.

Emery- Dylan is an awesome cook and I love his laugh. Dylan- She always makes me laugh and her ability to drive vehicles..... (she's terrible at driving).

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.

Emery- He has to try everything the dog eats to make sure its "good for her". Dylan - Emery will randomly start cleaning the house at 10pm.

Besides getting married - whats the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?

Emery - Celebrating with family and friends Dylan- Getting to see her for the first look.

Tell us how you first met? Who, what, when, where, why? Give us the dirty details.

We "met" on the Tinder app. Mitch made his account the night before he matched with Kiley. We spent the day texting back and forth, starting with the "getting to know you" stuff and ending with Mitch giving play-by-plays of the Vikings game. We met in person a couple days later at the Wurst Beer Hall in Fargo. We had a couple drinks and continued getting to know each other. After a couple hours, Kiley had to leave to go meet a friend, so Mitch begged to have a second date. It must've worked, because they agreed to meet again for a second date.

Mitch & Kiley_Wedding-008.jpg

When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.

Mitch: I was attracted to Kiley pretty much from the get-go. I found her incredibly easy to talk to, and I found her eyes and smile completely irresistible. I think the "she's the one" moment came when I graduated with my Master's Degree. Kiley took the day off and was with me during my hooding ceremony and the commencement ceremony and during it all I thought about how incredibly supportive, patient, and encouraging she was of me even though we had only been dating a year at that point. When we met I was working 25+ hours a week, interning at a counseling center for 20 hours, and I was taking 2 night classes; Kiley was perfectly content hanging out with me and watching a movie when I was feeling exhausted. When I was writing my thesis and conducting my research study she was always there with a smile and an encouraging word whenever I hit writer's block or going through one of the many headaches I had during that process. I suppose I figured if she'd stick with me through all that and be there to celebrate with me, then we could handle anything else life could throw at us. Kiley: After the first few months of dating, I wanted to break up the relationship because I was nervous to let my walls down. Mitch was very stubborn and persistent that our relationship wouldn't end and at that moment along with the few weeks after that I knew I couldn't be without him. He was understanding of my hesitations and was patient while I worked on letting my walls down!

Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?)

After about a year and a half of dating, one of our mutual friends got engaged which got us talking: where was this whole thing going? This conversation lead to us buying a ring together, but the ball was in Mitch's court. Fast forward to around Thanksgiving of that year- Mitch and Kiley were visiting relatives and vacationing in Florida. Kiley and Mitch (mostly Kiley) were Harry Potter fans so they had to check out Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Kiley had no clue Mitch had packed the ring in his suitcase, and that he spent the first day of their park visit observing security protocols to make sure that the metal detector and guards didn't blow his secret. On the second night of their visit, they watched a firework and light show at Hogwarts castle. When it was over, they walked to the bridge next to it and Mitch popped the question.

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.

Mitch: Her eyes and smile still has me just as smitten now as it did on day one. Other than that, Kiley actively tries to push me out of my comfort zone and try new things quite often. Despite the fact that I can be stubborn and resistant sometimes, I still love her for it. Kiley: I love that he challenges me intellectually, how patient he is, and his nerdy sense of humor! When I first met Mitch I was nervous because he actually loves me for me and I only ever had to be myself which I had never experienced in a relationship before. It allows me to feel free and everyday he pushes me to let go and encourages me to just simply be who I am!

Mitch & Kiley_Wedding-083.jpg

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.

Mitch: She carries around a blue blanket all over the house. She won't let me wash it unless she's not at home. Kiley: When I have had a rough day or whenever he feels like I need a pick me up, we watch puppy and babies laughing at puppy videos.

Besides getting married - whats the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?

Mitch: I'm excited for my mom and sisters to meet Kiley's family. Especially her dad- that's going to be funny. Kiley: I am excited for our families to formally meet and get to know each other!

Tell us how you first met? Who, what, when, where, why? Give us the dirty details.

Abby- We first met back in August of 2011 at our Hy-Vee orientation, we were both juniors in high school and ended up also being in a couple classes together. We quickly became friends and would constantly flirt with each other. We dated for a little bit but ended up going our separate ways. It wasn’t until my senior year of college we reconnected again and the rest is history!

When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.

There was something that brought us back together and I think we both just knew our lives would be better together than apart.

Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?)

I think I always knew in the back of my mind it would happen eventually but just didn’t know when, we already bought a house together and had a baby so I guess that was sort of our next step. Per Garitt the proposal didn’t take to long to plan, we had planned a trip to go up to Bentleyville in Duluth and that is when he decided to pop the question! He took me out to “our spot” at Enger Tower which is where he asked me to be his girlfriend back in 2015 and that’s when he got down on his knee and asked me to be his wife. I was obviously ecstatic I was getting to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.

Abby- The thing I love most about Garitt is he has the biggest heart and will do anything to make me laugh and smile. I also love that he cooks for me, cause I’m always hungry. Garitt- The thing I love most about Abby is she is the most caring/ selfless person I’ve ever met. Even if it’s not something she wants, she will do whatever it takes to make myself and my daughter happy. Which is why she deserves the world.

Garitt & Abby_Wedding-632.jpg

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.

Garitt- Something silly Abby does is when she trying making a joke that she thinks is really funny, she will repeat it to herself under her breath. And something quirky she does is when she cleans her ears she coughs.

Besides getting married - whats the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?

Abby- We are most excited to celebrate with all our family and friends and I also can’t wait to eat our cake :)

They have awesome personalities and are so much fun to work with.. also helps the take the most breathtaking photos on a day as big as your wedding ;) It was an easy choice!

Tell us how you first met? Who, what, when, where, why? Give us the dirty details. “We first met in Rochester at a Texas Roadhouse in January 2016.”

When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.Ty- “Her personality and smile caught me right away. She has the biggest heart.” Kristina- “His beard, smarta** humor and down to earth personality caught me., oh and that smile!”

FaceBook-01-3.jpg

Tell us about the proposal. (Did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning?, how did you feel? nervous, excited, freaking out?) Ty and I went to Rochester to run errands (we were at each other’s throats entire time)! Then we came back home and Ty wanted to be dropped off at home (to get ring) and I went to my dads. Ty then drove in yard by the shop and went around the combine and as I came around the other side Ty was down on one knee and my little nephew was driving his pedal tractor with a sign that said “Donna will you marry Ty?” Little back story, my nephew calls me Donna. Engagement was a surprise other than a few days before Ty asked me why size of ring I wear! Haha!

Tell us the one thing you love most about each other. Both of our personality's , big hearts and love for each other and willing to help others with nothing in return!

If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does. Ty’s laugh sounds like a chipmunk so myself and family call him Alvin! Kristina makes this funny face that is cute but weird, HaHa!

Besides getting married - whats the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day? To spend the day with all of our loved family and friends!
